History of Romero House
Romero House was founded March 8,1982. In
recognition of Archbishop
Oscar A. Romero of San Salvador, our namesake, we have decided to make March
24th our official anniversary in commemoration of the date of his assassination. The aim of Romero House is to serve one hot
meal 7 days a week to the needy-dependent of our community. This service was
primarily for the uptown core people. Over our years of service, this group has
grown considerably to include people from many more walks of life. Romero House presently provides service to:
people who are/were drug and alcohol dependent, people who have been
de-institutionalized, 4th and 5th generation welfare and E.I. Recipients or
those waiting for benefits, ex-service personnel, low income families, the
working poor, and the elderly. Romero House has expanded its service over
the years to include: clothing/household services, a chapel, emergency food
orders, family projects, a Healthcare room, and a Mobile Service during the
winter months. As needs within our community arise Romero house strives to
maintain its commitment of ensuring that all members of our community will have
a fuller and happier life. Romero House remains independent of
government assistance, i.e. Grants, etc. It was our decision from the beginning
to trust ourselves to the freewill donations of our community. Romero House is a Christian ministry and by
being dependent on God and our fellowman, we do not have to modify our voices in
speaking out on issues that deeply affect the recipients of Romero House. We
have not been disappointed. Romero House is fully incorporated and has
a charitable tax number. Our board members are invited from among our volunteer
workers to sit on the board. In this field of service ministry, it is our
feeling that persons with hands-on experience are better able to understand the
care and service that is given to our recipients. |
