What's New at Romero House!

MOBILE UNIT

In December of 1999, Romero House began a Mobile Service on the streets of Saint John to provide assistance to anyone stranded without a place to stay during the cold winter months. This service was provided until March 30th and completed a total of 328 acts of service. There were 48 individuals who frequented the Mobile 10 of which were homeless. Romero House purchased 18 nights at the YMCA to assist these individuals. Most of the 48 individuals live in terrible conditions yet because they have a roof over their heads they are not considered homeless.

Example: one man lived in a wood shed and kept the stairwells and sidewalk swept in return for his “home”. Others suffer from insomnia, some are schizophrenic (treated and untreated) and some not yet diagnosed. The rooming houses are alcohol and drug infested, noisy and violent. Bullies and abusers rule the roost and the only escape is the streets until one is ready to drop. Finally they are the mentally and physically handicapped who suffer from all of the above including illiteracy.

Our experience on the Saint John streets this winter did not present many new faces. As a matter of fact only 4 were strangers to us. We did however see these people in a night setting and it did serve to present a more in depth picture of what they’re up against in their fight for survival. It put a clearer light on the “homeless” question of “How many?” and “Why?”. Aside from the sadness of the lack of basic human needs we were able to establish a communal circle that we the volunteers looked forward to nightly. We are all healthily tired but missing our friends at night.

We will continue again in November.

                                                                   Sincerely in Christ
